Bullying Guide

If you are being bullied in school then you can go to your teachers for help and they must do everything they can to straighten it out and stop the bullying while you’re in school. Bullying however can continue outside of school during the weekends and holidays and school has nothing to do with the bullying when this happens, so what can be done to put a stop to bullying outside of school? There are several ways that you can help to make life easier for yourself if you are being bullied outside of school, these include:

* Ask you friends to call for you before you go out instead of walking to friends’ homes on your own.

* Try taking a slightly different route than you would normally take if you are alone.

* If you’re out alone in the dark then stick to well lit streets.

* Try avoiding areas that you know bullies hang out such as shops, playgrounds and parks.

* Get a personal safety alarm or a whistle and use it if you are threatened.

* If bullies call you names don’t reply just ignore them and carry on walking.

* If you have an a older brother or sister then let them walk with you to your friends’ house.

* Get a lift from your parents to a friends’ house.

Most bullies think it’s clever to call you names they know will upset you and any reaction you have to them name calling will only egg them on and they will do it all the more. If they see that you are upset then they will torment you more so try not to show that their behaviour upsets you or frightens you.

Tell someone you’re being bullied

It is very important that you tell someone if you are or have been bullied on any occasion, whether this is at school or home, it is not a sign of weakness and it doesn’t mean you are a coward for not dealing with it yourself.

If you are being hit or kicked then the person doing this could get into serious trouble as it is a criminal offence and even making obscene gestures and calling you names is termed as harassment. Often children are afraid that they won’t be taken seriously when they say they’re being bullied but more and more attention is being paid to bullying and it is taken very seriously by parents, teachers and the police.

It can be helpful particularly if the police have to become involved if you have kept a journal of the bullying in as much detail as you can. For example writing down dates and times and what was said or done at the time.

What will be done about the bullying?

If you are being bullied on a daily basis by the same person and they are physically harming you as well as mentally then your parents can call the police and someone will come and talk to you about the bullying.

Special police community support officers will usually get involved and they will come and talk to both you and the person responsible for the bullying. In most cases this sorts the problem out as the police will often give the child an unofficial warning, if it doesn’t or the bullying gets worse then the police will come back and take statements from you and they might recommend that you bring criminal charges against the bully.

If the bully admits what they have done then probably they will have to visit the police station and a caution will be given if it goes further then they may have to attend a court hearing and be prosecuted and it will go down on record.

Can a school suspend someone for bullying for something that happened outside of school?

Is it legal to suspend a student from public school for something that didn't happen AT school? this is my district's procedure: http://district279.org/who/polpro/policy514.cfm It says that it is in affect "...at any time or any place..." directly in the policy, but is it legal for their jurisdiction to be that far? Also, the incident at hand was partially created at school, however the act in itself wasn't bullying. A student took a video of another student and put it on youtube. The student who was video'd found the video on youtube, and now the video-taker is suspended. Is this a fair move by the district?

Answer:
Sadly yes.

Getting Bullied Outside Of School Grounds?

This group of people is trying to pick on me when I'm at the bus stop. One of them tried 2 punch me and I've kinda reacted and hit him back. He didn't do anything and left me alone. I'm wondering what should I do because telling someone just made it worse. First time i was getting bullied, I've told my school's anti-bullying guy of some sort. He had a talk with my bullies and just days later they started again. They call me a snitch and stuff and bully me more common. Tip? don't tell me 2 avoid them or tell somebody because that wouldn't work

Answer:
There obviously showing that there not as 'big and heard' as they like to think if they haven't done anything when uve hit them back. The best thing you can do is go about the schoool anti-bully n go tell an actual teacher or the principal, or speak to your parents. Cos if you fight them back theres a chance that a teacher will see and when you try to tell them the situation they wont believe you. It takes a bigger person to walk away. but remember bullies only bully because there jealous! hope this helps n good luck xxx

Bullying Outside School Question: 7

How do we as Adults handle kids that are bulling our children outside of school?

We've already switched schools, unfortunately the bullying is continuing after school. It is to the point where we are unable to let are children go to the park and ride bikes and have fun with the other children in our area. Aside from teaching them to kick these kid's butts (which I'd love to do, but know it won't help) or even better, sending my husband over to their house to kick THIER dad's butt, what do we do? I've had one encounter with the "mother" and well, needless to say I know exactly why her children are they way they are. She's a complete MONSTER. Any ideas?

Answer:
You say the mother's a monster, so the kids are the same. Maybe the kids need another role model. You are going to hate this, but I say try to make friends with the bully kids. Invite them--the kids only, not the awful mother--over for cookies or hot dogs and talk to them in a friendly, non-threatening way. Always be polite and wave or speak nicely to them when you see them in the neighborhood. If the bullies like and respect you, they'll leave your kids alone.

Bullying Outside School Question: 8

Is there a potential criminal case here? School "bullying"?

Our daughter (16) goes to a military boarding school in Virginia. To make the story short, 4 girls decided to "get" her by alleging the use of pot. The school's drug policy is zero tolerance - expulsion for illegal drug use. No second chances. These girls all independantly told the same story and went around telling everyone that she had been busted for drugs. The school drug tested her (which has since come back NEGATIVE), locked her dorm room down pending a search, searched her person, made her sleep on a couch outside the guard's office for the weekend - essentially treated her like a criminal. I do NOT blame the school for their actions on this. However, now that our daughter is exonerated I am not happy with the school's lack of interest in pursuing these horrible girls who now giggle about how they "got her good", and of course most people haven't heard about the negative result. I think there may be a criminal case here. They tried to get her expelled. Anyone know? Yes it is a private school. I know nothing (and neither does my daughter) of any connection these girls may have to a wealthy benefactor or faculty member. Of course I can prove it was them they filed complaints with the school with their names attached to it. Written statements about she was smoking pot.

Answer:
I doubt you have enough evidence to pursue charges. How are you going to prove to a jury that it was these 4 girls that started the rumor?

Bullying Outside School Question: 10

School bully.?

I've had a fight with my best friend and I don't see us ever being friends again. I'm fine with this, but she has decided to take it further by threatening to hit me outside of school. She is alot bigger than me and I know she will not hesitate to knock my block off. I've told her that I will call the cops if she touches me and she doesn't care. I've also told my mother and she won't do anything until after i've been hit. How to I avoid getting hit without showing weakness?

Answer:
your doing fine on your own so far.. and if she does hit you, then make that call.. keep a buddy with you at all times.. that way you will have a witness 2 her assult.. i had 2 fight a bully, much bigger then i.. it worked out great.. the bigger they are, the harder they fall.. and i'm sure she hung her head in shame on the next school day.. i did leave her bleeding and i say that with pride.. take lessons in self defence.. it's the only way 2 survive : )
